The Benefits Of Adding Coconut Oil To Your Beauty Routine

Coconut oil is a long loved champion, holding the record of at least ten evidence-based health benefits to date. Talk about healthy fatty acids that help your body and brain function in addition to skin and hair. I'll take two!

Jumping into my passion for skincare started about five years ago after attending cosmetology school in my late teenage years. My counters and drawers full of beloved cosmetics ranging from foundation to eyeshadow, face wash to moisturizers, and so much more. Overtime I grew a curiosity in becoming more aware of what ingredients were in the products that would touch my skin every single day. And perhaps along the way I discovered the most versatile beauty product out there - coconut oil! Packed with vitamins D, E, and K, I noticed transformation in my skin, hair, and nails over my time using it. No wonder this superfood was no stranger to the beauty community everywhere.

I'm constantly reaching for coconut oil just about every other week in the grocery store to use on several different occasions in the kitchen, but isn't it neat that this hidden gem is well founded in the beauty department too? I'm totally excited that today I'm here to share five different ways that you can add coconut oil into your everyday routine right now. What are we waiting for? Let's go!

Number one - makeup remover.

This has to be one of the best discoveries I've established yet! Move over micellar water and wipes, things just got a whole lot easier. It may be difficult to imagine in this moment that rubbing a glob of oil on your face would do the trick of removing every inch of waterproof mascara, heavy eyeliner, and stubborn makeup, but it certainly won't disappoint! Coconut oil is great at breaking down even the toughest of cosmetics and does that job extremely well. I'll be the first to say that I've tried just about every wipe and makeup remover on the market, only to find that the very oil I cook with everyday leaves me with the best results.

You'll start by dabbing about a quarter size scoop of oil onto a coconut round or your hands and applying it to your face. Quick tip, coconut oil when purchased comes in a solid form, but warms up with the heat of your hands. Begin moving your hands in circular motions across the face, ending with the eyes last.  Ending with the eyes will keep the break ups of mascara from spreading all over the face. Once complete, rinse hands and face with water, then pat dry. You can find tutorials on youtube of how to do this for further instruction.

This is a reminder that a little oil goes a long way! You'll want to be aware when picking out coconut oil that it's raw, virgin, unrefined, and organic. This is the most pure form which is important when using on your skin.

Because it's incredibly moisturizing, my skin feels soft and supple just after washing my makeup off. I mean, this is even before my face wash comes in the scene! I'll be honest and say I was skeptical about using oil to remove my makeup because I've continually disliked oil makeup removers attempted in the past. They left my skin far too greasy for my liking and felt dirtier then before. That is not the case here. My skin is continuing to improve as I incorporate this product.

Number two - Say hello to your first inexpensive eye cream! That's right. As easy as it sounds, coconut oil helps aid in reducing the appearance of wrinkles (also great for stretch marks too!). Due to it's hydrating properties, this is one of the simplest ways to keep those under eyes moisturized.

With the smallest amount, gently press the oil under your eyes using your ring finger in back and forth motions, moving from the inner eye to the outer eye and back. This is the last step in my skincare routine. Show some extra love to that delicate skin under the eye. I'm sure you won't regret it!

Number three - Everything hair. Coconut oil works wonders on dry, frizzy, kinky, coarse, textured, or damaged hair. The fatty acids we talked about earlier assist in softening the hair follicles and trapping moisture inside. Depending on your hair type, the amount of oil to apply will vary. For some, it's the more, the merrier. For others, you'll want to start small and work your way up. Adjust accordingly after some trial and error.

There are several different methods that coconut oil can be used for with hair. Hair masks, treatments, frizz tamer, and more. One of my favorites has been minimizing my frizz and flyaways. You can achieve this by adding a drop, dap, or handful (depending on your hair type) and rubbing it into the palm of your hands. Using your hands, glide it over your frizz to give your hair a more smooth appearance. It's great for the ends of your hair too if you suffer with split ends or additional kinks that need some TLC.

Number four - Looking for a straightforward body moisturizer? You don't have to look far! Coconut oil is one of the most luxurious lotions out there that will always leave your skin feeling incredibly moisturized. It's time to ditch lotions full of chemicals for a thin layer of oil. When you hop out of the shower, apply oil everywhere needed. You'll start the day right the following morning by waking up with the softest skin! In addition to my body, this is the moisturizer I use at night in my skincare. My husband is a testimony to the greatness of this beauty secret. He is always raving about my soft skin and it's coconut oil that I have to thank.

Number five - Body and lip scrubs! Another replacement in your beauty routine, I know right? This is where your creative juices can get flowing because it's totally customizable. Face scrub and body scrub, you name it. If you want to add essential oils for additional benefits, you go girl!

The two easy ingredients you'll need are ones you most likely have in your house at this very moment. Coconut oil and sugar. You'll place 1/2 cup of coconut oil over the stove at medium heat for about two minutes. Once melted, transfer the oil into a mixing bowl and stir in 1 cup of sugar. Mix together well. Transfer to a mason jar and you're done! Keep mixture in an air tight container and store in the fridge for up to two weeks. Wasn't that effortless? You'll be able find additional recipes online if you want to tailor it to your preference or needs.

So there you have it, friends! Beauty really doesn't have to be complicated. You don't have to feel overwhelmed anymore about what products to buy at the store. I hope these five coconut oil tricks will help you pull together an inexpensive, natural, and easy at home routine for all of your beauty needs. The benefits of coconut oil are endless and if you're anything like me, you'll love the smell too!
